Kodak Bankruptcy Means Patent Lawsuit Chaos (Mobiledia)
The sale of Kodak's patent portfolio, as well as lawsuits against Apple and
HTC, are in question after Eastman Kodak filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
protection.
Bankruptcy protection will allow the photography icon to regroup after running
short on the cash it needed to fund its turnaround, following its decades-long
struggle to cope with the rise of digital technology and mobile devices. The
company initiated legal proceedings against Apple and HTC as well as mulled a
sale of its patent portfolio, both attempts to regain its footing.
The Rochester, New York-based company, when filing suit against Apple and HTC
for patent infringement, said it had held several discussions with both
companies but wasn't able to reach an agreement. Kodak co-president Laura
Quatela said the failure to reach patent agreements with the tech companies
"impedes our ability to continue to innovate and introduce new products."
The lawsuit is still likely to go on, even with the Chapter 11 bankruptcy
filing, as Kodak will still need an income stream that will allow it to stay
in business. With smartphone sales skyrocketing, a successful ruling will mean
extra money for Kodak if a judge orders Apple or HTC to ...
