Fashion Photography Lighting
Best time for portrait/ fashion photography?
I read somewhere that the best time to shoot portraits is really early in the morning.
I understand that this will reduce any harsh shadows, but I dont have any fancy lighting equipment, so will a reflector still work inh these conditions?
Yes, generally the best times for photography are earlier in the day and around sunset time because the light in both those times is softer and less direct.
It doesn’t mean you have to be in pitch darkness of early morning or late afternoon. Just before you get into the direct midday sun.
Try to position your subject so that the light is hitting them from the side (it will produce more interesting effects and mood than if they’re lit straight on from the front). Your goal should be to have one side of their face well lit and a triangle of light on their opposite cheek. It’s often called Rembrandt lighting to position lights in that way (looks like his paintings). You could use a reflector on the opposite side from your light source if you want to fill in the shadows a bit. Depends on the effect you’re going for in your shot. But it’s not necessary if you make sure there’s enough natural light. (In a studio you can achieve that same side lighting effect – above and to the side – with softboxes).
You also may want to use a softer setting (not too sharp a contrast) and a larger aperture (shallow depth of field) depending on the type of portrait you’re taking. For edgy fashion you’d want a more contrasty, stark look perhaps. Match your lighting and settings to what you want to achieve in the final shot. Have fun!
