does it hurt a model’s interest to let a photography student use his/her pictures for portfolio?

i need more experience with portriats. but i’m not sure whether that hurts a model’s interest from his/her perspective like careerwise. is there like a modeling rule that you shouldn’t let a photographer use your picture for free or something(posed picture that i take of them)?

No not usually…the model will want a good portfolio to tout around. She can choose to include your images if she thinks they’re good (or not…). Either way, the more images a model has, the more range she has to choose from when putting together her port.

Models often work on a TF* basis (either TFCD=time for CD, or TFP=time for prints). Basically they don’t charge for their time, but you give them prints or a CD of selected images. Both parties win – they get shots for their portfolios and you get to practice & add to your portfolio.

Usage of the images needs to be agreed beforehand, with a model release form signed if necessary (ie if you’re going to use them for commercial purposes). You should ensure that the copyright remains with you (ie don’t sign the rights over to the model!)

When I select models I usually work on a TF* basis, but pay travelling expenses & provide refreshment for the model(s) if its an all day shoot. Models usually put on their profile (ie on Model Mayhem) whether they do TF* work or expect to get paid or whether it depends on the shoot.
